In May, we brought our boat to Ultimate Motorsports in Sacramento for an oil warning. The owner (Jason) claimed our engine and fuel injectors were shot and quoted $7,000 for a refurbished engine. A couple of weeks later, Jason called saying he found an OEM engine on eBay for $4,000 and could install it for just over $5,000. He said he would order it for us. The eBay listing was deleted, with no sales history. I grew uneasy since no purchase occurred through eBay, so there was no buyer protection.
Jason kept urging my husband to bring the boat to his shop to pull the old engine, even though he didn’t yet have the new engine. My husband assumed it was to make use of limited shop space. On 6/2, Jason pulled the engine. I asked for the old engine back since he promised a “plug-and-play” replacement, but he became defensive, claiming he needed it for parts, which made no sense. That night, I found multiple reviews online warning that Jason had scammed other customers.
The next day, my husband retrieved our engine, and Jason handed us a $500 bill for pulling it. We have been gone most of the summer and didn't want to spend thousands on this boat so it took us some time to find another mechanic who seemed trustworthy. Two months later, another mechanic inspected it and confirmed the engine Jason left us was not ours. It had barnacles and rust all throughout the inside, it didn't have the issues present that the previous mechanic claimed were there, and it hadn’t been run in over two years. Jason had swapped our functional engine with a junk engine from his shop. We ran our boat 3x this year and the new mechanic said there is no way this engine was running this year. He said 2+ years.
We were clearly misled and scammed. He pressured us, fabricated buying us a fake eBay engine, and replaced our working engine with a worthless one, resulting in significant financial loss.
Has anyone had this happen before? I've submitted a police report, filed with my insurance, and am now working with legal. I live in CA and saw that boat mechanics do not need to be licensed. Any other tips on state agencies I can report him to?
