Just getting around to sharing but we took the boat out to Lewisville last weekend and for any of you who may have been out there with us, the conditions were less than optimal with some gusty winds and lots of big boat traffic; the norm this time of year. Whilst making the turn at the point coming back into Little Elm from the Lake Dallas arm, we were greeted with boat parts littered in the water about 100 ft from shore. Saw a couple captains chairs, seat cushions and what appeared to be an engine cover floating in the water before we noted what remained of a pretty large hull that had drifted just below the surface with only a couple feet exposed above the water’s surface; a sad sight to witness but even worse I suspect for the boat’s owner. Circled a couple times and didn’t see anyone in the water so we called it in and Little Elm dispatched a patrol to secure the area given this is a main thoroughfare for a lot of boats making the turn. Needless to say a party barge nearby greeted us and we discovered all souls had made it safely on board, the owner of the boat included. Got a thumbs up from the owner when we asked if everyone was ok but my heart went out to the guy and his family. We didn’t want to speculate however my gut tells me the boat was traveling too fast for the conditions. Certainly not the end to the day that family might have expected when they woke up that day but a stark reminder to all of us who call ourselves boaters...to be always be vigilant of our surroundings and the conditions we face on the water. Glad everyone made it out safe.
