The previous owner of the boat did some saltwater boating. The trailer (Shorelander YAV2413SW) is 12 years old so it’s got some age on it, then add in the saltwater exposure and it needs some love.
I’m planning to replace all of the bunk brackets and bunks themselves. Things are wobbly and rusty and I worry every time I go over a bump or load/unload the boat. Has anyone ever done this? And if so, any tips? The only thing I’m really worried about is getting the angles correct for the bracket holding the actual bunk so it supports the boat correctly. I also worry about the level of rust/seized bolts or even shearing something off, but that’s what grinders and cut off wheels are for!
Looking to use brackets sold by CE Smith to replace the OE stuff and I’ll cut and re-carpet the bunks myself using the old ones as a template. Will also use the old ones to mark the mounting locations. CE has several options based on height, so I need to measure the current brackets to get an idea of what to buy. Looks like they come with all the hardware so that’s good and they look much beefier than stock. I have access to our agency boat ramp and dock, so I can launch the boat and tie up and effect the repairs (hopefully) right there without tying up a public ramp or risk the park rangers yelling at me for doing repairs in the parking lot. Ideally I’d like to buy a new trailer but it’s not in the budget and overall pointless I think. The frame, jack, winch are all in great shape. New rims and tires last year. Need to do leaf springs and hubs, but otherwise the bulk of the trailer is fine.
Any tips, advice, thoughts etc appreciated!
